Blue Nights, Joan Didion, November ’11: Didion is a mesmerizing writer, as always. i haven’t read Year of Magical Thinking, but i don’t imagine it makes much of a difference. a moving meditation on the passage of time, and loved ones that pass with it.
The Storm at the Door, June ’11: Stefan Merrill Block: one of those novels-based-on-true-personal-family-history, which i usually find confounding, but this one’s a good-un. a woman has her alcoholic, moody husband committed to an asylum — and he remains a patient for longer than either of them expected. was he crazy, and what does it mean to the family either way? not done yet, but loving.
